Toronto, November 23, 2016 – Violinist, Shane Kim is the 2016 recipient of the Orford String Quartet Award. The $3,000 award is given biennially to an emerging Canadian professional string chamber musician.
Toronto-born Shane Kim has been a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since the 2012-2013 season. Prior positions include Principal Violin of the IRIS Chamber Orchestra and Concertmaster appearances with the Tucson Symphony and at the festivals of Aspen and Spoleto-Charleston.
Shane is a founding member of the XIA String Quartet, with fellow TSO musicians Theresa Rudolph and Joseph Johnson, and Robert Uchida of the Edmonton Symphony. Shane has performed chamber music at Ravinia, the Taos Chamber Music Festival, the Encuentro de Musica in Santander, Spain, and has performed with musicians of the New Orford String Quartet, Amici, the Bakken Trio and the TSO Chamber Soloists.
Shane Kim received his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto, where he studied with noted pedagogue David Zafer, and chamber music with Lorand Fenyves. Shane continued his studies at the Yale School of Music with Peter Oundjian and the Tokyo String Quartet. Since 2015, Shane has been on the faculty at the Toronto Summer Music Festival.
Shane was selected by a jury comprising Lillian Scheirich, Concertmaster, Windsor Symphony (Windsor, ON); Jennifer Taylor, Artistic Producer, Music Toronto (Toronto, ON), and Jordan Wyshniowsky, Principal Cello, North Bay Symphony (North Bay, ON). The jury members stated that, “Shane Kim’s passion shines through his music, and he connects strongly with both the music and the audience. The continued health of chamber music in Canada relies upon musicians like Shane.”
The Orford String Quartet Fund was established in 1993 by the members of the acclaimed Orford String Quartet – Andrew Dawes, Desmond Hoebig, Kenneth Perkins and Sophie Renshaw. During 25 years of performances, the Orford was one of the best-known string quartets in the world. The fund supports the Orford String Quartet’s influence on the development of chamber music in Canada and its encouragement of emerging Canadian string players.
