” Laura Ciruls was a close friend of mine. We would go to openings together and we would regularly meet for studio visits. Receiving the Laura Ciruls Painting Award was a personal honour and I am grateful that I benefitted from her philanthropy. “
What are you currently doing?
Currently I am part of a group exhibition at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery and I will have work in upcoming group exhibitions at Richard Heller Gallery, Los Angeles (2016) and Western Exhibitions, Chicago (2017). I am also working towards a solo exhibition at Richard Hellery Gallery, Los Angeles (2017).
What did receiving the Laura Ciruls Painting Award mean to you?
Laura Ciruls was a close friend of mine. We met when I was administrative director of Loop Gallery and she was a Loop Gallery artist. We would go to openings together and we would regularly meet for studio visits. Our visits continued up until the day before she died. Receiving the Laura Ciruls Painting Award in 2015 was a personal honour and I am grateful that I benefitted from her philanthropy.
What does private arts philanthropy mean to you as a working artist?
Laura often talked to me about wanting to set up an Ontario Arts Foundation Laura Ciruls Painting Award. Generous philanthropy such as hers is beneficial to help fund important art practices in Canada.
