Emmanuel Vukovich awarded the Orford String Quartet Scholarship

Toronto, September 23, 2004ó Emmanuel Vukovich, a violin student at Montreal's McGill University, is this year's winner of the $2,500 Orford String Quartet Scholarship.

A Julliard graduate, Emmanuel Vukovich has already attracted considerable attention as a soloist and chamber musician.  Vukovich has performed at The Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts in New York, the SUNY Performing Arts Center in New York, as well as at The Natural History Museum in London, England. He is a Lloyd Carr-Harris Scholarship recipient at McGill University, and is the first violinist of the Lloyd Carr-Harris String Quartet.

Emmanuel was selected from a field of nominees by a jury consisting of  Marie Bérard (violinist, concert master with the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra), Jennifer Taylor (General Manager/Producer with Music Toronto), and Paul Pulford (cellist, former member of the Penderecki String Quartet).

In commenting on the winner, the jurors stated ìEmmanuel Vukovich possesses an exceptional standard of musicianship and is highly dedicated to chamber music in Canada.î

The Orford String Quartet Scholarship Fund was established in 1993 by the members of the highly-acclaimed Orford String Quartet -- Andrew Dawes, Desmond Hoebig, Kenneth Perkins and Sophie Renshaw.  During 25 years of performances, the Orford was one of the best-known string quartets in the world.  The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a Canadian string musician with studies, commissions, or performances related to their work in chamber music.  The scholarship continues the Orford String Quartet's influence on the development of chamber music in Canada and its encouragement of aspiring young Canadian string players.

The Orford String Quartet Scholarship Fund is administered by the Ontario Arts Council Foundation. The Ontario Arts Council manages the selection process.
