Toronto, December 20, 2018 – Violinist, Hua-Chu Huang is the 2018 recipient of the Orford String Quartet Award. The $3,000 award is given biennially to an emerging Canadian professional string chamber music musician.
Hua-Chu Huang, a youthful and versatile musician, brings a wealth of experience in solo, chamber, and orchestral playing. He is a passionate performer of new works in addition to canonized repertoire. Mr. Huang recently collaborated with flutist Carol Wincenc in the Canadian premiere of Yuko Uebeyashi’s Misericordia at the Banff Centre, and also presented Andrew Norman’s Gran Turismo at Toronto’s New Music Festival, 21C. Mr. Huang has appeared in concert with Erika Raum, Scott St. John, Steven Dann, Barry Shiffman, and the new music ensemble suddenlyLISTEN. He is also the founder of Asterisk*, a Toronto-based conductorless chamber orchestra.
Mr. Huang was a winner of the 2017 Glenn Gould School Chamber Competition placing first in the duo category with Chu-Yi Duo, the duo was awarded the grand prize a performance with the Montrose Trio in their debut in Koerner Hall. Mr. Huang placed second and third in the chamber category with the Louise String Quartet and the Eastern Trio.
Mr. Huang has recently received his Artist Diploma as a Temerty Family Fellow at The Glenn Gould School of The Royal Conservatory of Music, studied with Paul Kantor and Barry Shiffman; having previously earned his Bachelor of Music from Dalhousie University under the tutelage of Philippe Djokic.
Hua-Chu was selected by a jury comprising Joseph Johnson, cellist, Principal Cellist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Santa Fe Opera, and educator (Toronto, ON); Lance Ouellette, violinist, Associate Concertmaster of the Kitchener Waterloo Symphony, and educator (Kitchener, ON), and Sharon Wei, violinist, co-founder of Ensemble Made in Canada, member of Supernova String Quartet, and educator (London, ON). The jury members were unanimous in their selection, stating that, “Hua-Chu Huang is a leader and mentor. He shows a high level of musicianship, inspiration and energy in his performances. We felt joy in his playing and his enthusiasm is infectious. We are excited to follow his future trajectory.”
The Orford String Quartet Fund was established in 1993 by the members of the acclaimed Orford String Quartet – Andrew Dawes, Desmond Hoebig, Kenneth Perkins and Sophie Renshaw. During 25 years of performances, the Orford was one of the best-known string quartets in the world. The fund supports the Orford String Quartet’s influence on the development of chamber music in Canada and its encouragement of emerging Canadian string players.
