Toronto – February 9, 2015 \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Toronto artist\u00a0Sasha Pierce<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is the 2015 recipient of the\u00a0Prix Laura Ciruls<\/a>. Le\u00a0<\/span>$4,500\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>award is given annually to recognize an Ontario based mid-career painter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sasha Pierce<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0received her MFA from the University of Waterloo were she was awarded the Sylvia Knight Graduate Award in Fine Arts.\u00a0 She was also awarded Honorable Mention Award in the 2009 RBC Canadian Painting Competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sasha Pierce has had solo exhibitions at\u00a0ACME<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(Los Angeles, CA), CTRL Gallery (Houston, TX), and Greener Pastures Contemporary Art (Toronto).<\/span><\/p>\n

Sasha Pierce\u2019s work has also been included in exhibitions at\u00a0Ballhaus Ost<\/a>\u00a0(Berlin),\u00a0Dunlop Art Gallery<\/a>\u00a0(Regina, Saskatchewan),\u00a0Cambridge Galleries<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(Cambridge, ON),\u00a0Macdonald Stewart Art Centre<\/a>\u00a0(Guelph),\u00a0Mercer Union<\/a>\u00a0et le\u00a0Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art<\/a>\u00a0(Toronto). Sasha\u2019s work will be featured in an upcoming two person show at<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Open Studio<\/a>\u00a0and a solo exhibition at\u00a0Jessica Bradley Gallery<\/a>\u00a0(Toronto).\u00a0 Sasha is represented by Jessica Bradley Gallery.<\/span><\/p>\n

The jury members were unanimous in their selection and stated, \u201cThe formal strength of Sasha Pierce\u2019s painting is exciting.\u00a0 Her reference to textile, craft and \u2018women\u2019s work\u2019 creates an interesting tension drawing the viewer into the dialogue.\u00a0 Sasha Pierce\u2019s unique paintings speak to the future.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Ontario Arts Foundation manages the endowment that funds the award.\u00a0 The Ontario Arts Council administers the nomination and selection process.\u00a0\u00a0 The award was selected by a jury of visual artists comprised of\u00a0<\/span>Susan Blight\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Toronto),\u00a0<\/span>Melissa Doherty\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Kitchener),\u00a0<\/span>Chantal Rousseau\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Kingston),\u00a0<\/span>Jon Sasaki\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(Toronto) and\u00a0<\/span>Carl Ta\u00e7on\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(East Garafraxa).<\/span><\/p>\n

Previous recipients of the Laura Ciruls Painting Award include:\u00a0<\/span>Jinny Yu\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(2012),\u00a0<\/span>Andrew Rucklidge\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(2013), and\u00a0<\/span>Melissa Doherty\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>(2014).<\/span><\/p>\n
