Ayant re\u00c1u une formation classique chez l'une des \u00e9coles de musique prestigieuses de Cuba, M. Virelles a commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 s'int\u00e9resser au jazz en \u00e9coutant des disques de la collection de son grand-p\u00cbre. M. Virelles est reconnu pour avoir cr\u00e9\u00e9 son propre son distinctif, dont l'une des plus importantes composantes est l'improvisation au sein de structures diff\u00e9rentes.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u2026tabli \u00e0 Toronto depuis 2001, M. Virelles, qui est \u201ag\u00e9 de 25 ans, a \u00e9tudi\u00e9 \u00e0 l'Universit\u00e9 de Toronto et au coll\u00cbge Humber, o\u02d8 il a remport\u00e9 le premier prix Oscar Peterson \u00e0 \u00cdtre d\u00e9cern\u00e9. Ses compositions ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mises en vedette par plusieurs groupes et\/ou projets y compris par son quintette, ainsi que par Jane Bunnett et Spirits of Havana, le quatuor Neil Swainson, Francisco Mela, le quatuor Roberto Occhipinti et le quatuor Roman Filiu. La CBC (Radio-Canada anglaise) lui a command\u00e9 de la musique rendant hommage \u00e0 Glenn Gould, pour le 75e anniversaire de ce dernier. Le morceau, qui mettait en vedette M. Virelles et son quintette ainsi que le quatuor \u00e0 cordes Penderecki String Quartet, s'inspirait du documentaire de Glenn Gould intitul\u00e9 The Idea of the North. Laur\u00e9at de nombreux prix, M. Virelles a produit un premier album intitul\u00e9 Motion, sur \u00e9tiquette Justin Time, lequel met en vedette des compositions originales jou\u00e9es par son groupe.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\">David Virelles se joint \u00e0 une s\u00e9rie impressionnante de laur\u00e9ats. Le premier Prix Louis Applebaum pour les compositeurs, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9 au compositeur canadien R. Murray Schafer, en 1999, r\u00e9compensait l'oeuvre de toute une vie et rendait hommage tant \u00e0 l'excellence en composition qu'\u00e0 l'impact de l'\u00fauvre d'un compositeur sur la soci\u00e9t\u00e9. Alexina Louie et Alex Pauk ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les seconds r\u00e9cipiendaires du Prix, lequel soulignait l'excellence en compositions destin\u00e9es au cin\u00e9ma et \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision. James Rolfe, l'un des principaux compositeurs contemporains du Canada, a \u00e9t\u00e9 le troisi\u00cbme \u00e0 d\u00e9crocher le prix, en hommage \u00e0 son travail exceptionnel, dans le domaine de l'op\u00e9ra.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Louis Applebaum<\/strong> a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le <strong>Fonds Louis Applebaum pour les compositeurs<\/strong> chez la Fondation des arts de l'Ontario, en 1998, pour rendre hommage \u00e0 l'excellence en composition musicale, peu importe le genre. \u00b4 Le compositeur canadien Louis Applebaum a consacr\u00e9 sa vie au r\u00e9veil culturel du Canada, et cette \"magnifique obsession\u00ee l'a pouss\u00e9 \u00e0 devenir un fondateur de la Ligue canadienne de compositeurs et du Centre de musique canadienne. Il a contribu\u00e9 aux premiers stades de la cr\u00e9ation de l'Office national du film du Canada, du festival de Stratford et du Centre national des Arts, \u00e0 Ottawa.
