Toronto, 9 mai 2006<\/strong> - Des \u00e9l\u00cbves de l'\u00e9cole publique Lord Dufferin Junior and Senior<\/strong> de Toronto se sont joints \u00e0 Queen's Park \u00e0 l'honorable James K. Bartleman, lieutenant-gouverneur de l'Ontario<\/strong>, pour la remise des prix Ruth et Sylvia Schwartz de litt\u00e9rature jeunesse<\/strong>.<\/p>

La c\u00e9r\u00e9monie marquait le 30e anniversaire<\/strong> de ces prix. Chaque ann\u00e9e, des jurys compos\u00e9s d'\u00e9l\u00cbves d'une \u00e9cole ontarienne d\u00e9sign\u00e9e d\u00e9cernent ces prix nationaux dans deux volets : le volet Livres illustr\u00e9s<\/strong> (dans lequel le montant est partag\u00e9 entre l'auteur et l'illustrateur) et le volet Livres pour jeunes lecteurs<\/strong>.<\/p>

Par une \u00e9trange co\u00d4ncidence, les deux laur\u00e9ats de l'an 2000 sont \u00e9galement les laur\u00e9ats de cette ann\u00e9e. L'auteure et illustratrice montr\u00e9alaise Marie-Louise Gay<\/strong> a d\u00e9croch\u00e9 le prix de 5 000 $<\/strong> dans le volet Livres illustr\u00e9s pour son album Caramba<\/em><\/strong> (Groundwood Books\/House of Anansi Press), tandis que Skybreaker<\/em><\/strong> (HarperCollins Canada) a valu \u00e0 l'auteur torontois Kenneth Oppel<\/strong> le prix de 5 000 $<\/strong> dans le volet Livres pour jeunes lecteurs.<\/p>

Le lieutenant-gouverneur de l'Ontario a parl\u00e9 aux \u00e9l\u00cbves d'un sujet qui lui tient particuli\u00cbrement \u00e0 c\u00faur : l'alphab\u00e9tisation. L'\u00e9crivain Kenneth Oppel a re\u00c1u son prix en personne et a eu l'occasion de rencontrer les jeunes qui ont s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 son livre parmi les finalistes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Cinq \u00e9l\u00cbves de 3e<\/sup> et 4e<\/sup> ann\u00e9e ont choisi Caramba<\/strong><\/em> comme meilleur livre illustr\u00e9 en raison de ses \u00b4 illustrations accrocheuses \u00aa et de son histoire, qui leur a \u00b4 donn\u00e9 l'envie de le lire et de le relire \u00aa. Cinq \u00e9l\u00cbves de 7e<\/sup> et 8e<\/sup> ann\u00e9e ont choisi Skybreaker<\/strong><\/em> comme meilleur livre pour jeunes lecteurs en expliquant qu'il avait \u00b4 de nombreux rebondissements, une bonne intrigue, un d\u00e9nouement int\u00e9ressant \u00aa et qu'ils ont \u00b4 veill\u00e9 tard pour en terminer la lecture \u00aa.<\/p>

Les prix Ruth et Sylvia Schwartz de litt\u00e9rature jeunesse rendent hommage aux auteurs et illustrateurs canadiens qui se sont d\u00e9marqu\u00e9s par leur excellence dans le domaine de la litt\u00e9rature enfantine. Ces prix avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9s en 1976 par Sylvia Schwartz \u00e0 la m\u00e9moire de sa s\u00faur Ruth, libraire torontoise respect\u00e9e. En 2004, leur famille a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de rebaptiser le prix pour rendre hommage aux deux s\u00faurs. Le premier prix avait \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9cern\u00e9 \u00e0 Mordecai Richler, pour Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang, en 1976.<\/p>

Ces prix sont administr\u00e9s conjointement par le Conseil des arts de l'Ontario<\/strong> (qui choisit l'\u00e9cole et les jurys), la Fondation des arts de l'Ontario<\/strong>, la Fondation Ruth Schwartz<\/strong> et l'Association des libraires canadiens<\/strong> (dont les membres s\u00e9lectionnent les livres mis en lice).<\/p>
