The winners were selected by two juries of young readers from the school \u2013 a jury of\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>grade 3 and 4 students<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>selected the recipients of the\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>Children\u2019s Picture Book Award<\/strong><\/span>, and a jury of\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>grade 7 and 8 students<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>selected the recipient of the\u00a0<strong><span class=\"blue\">Young Adult \/ Middle Reader Award<\/span><\/strong>. Each student read the books individually and then worked together with their group to reach consensus and decide on a winner. I could not put it down.\u201d The jurors said that they \u201creally felt for Daniel as he struggled with the unknown,\u201d and that the book \u201chelped [them] understand Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).\u201d They recommend this book \u201cto help raise awareness of OCD, and to show people that they don\u2019t have to face it alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\">\u201cWinning this award is particularly meaningful because it recognizes a story that I am truly passionate about, and because it is a reflection of my favourite critics \u2013 young readers,&#8221;\u00a0said\u00a0<strong><span class=\"blue\">author Wesley King<\/span><\/strong>. &#8220;I am also thrilled that<em>\u00a0OCDaniel<\/em>\u00a0continues to be read and used to help understand people around us.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"plain_black\"><strong>About the Author<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul type=\"disc\"><li><span class=\"plain_grey\"><a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/authors\/Wesley-King\/452907296\">Wesley King<\/a>\u00a0has written four novels for young adults, including\u00a0<em>The Incredible Space Raiders from Space!<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Vindico<\/em>.<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"plain_grey\">He is a first-time nominee and laureate of the Schwartz Children\u2019s Book Awards.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span class=\"plain_black\"><strong>About the Awards<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul type=\"disc\"><li><span class=\"plain_grey\"><span class=\"blue\"><strong>Two awards of $6,000 each<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0are presented\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>annually\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>to recognize artistic excellence in writing and illustration in English-language Canadian children\u2019s literature.<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"plain_grey\">This year\u2019s selection committee comprised\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>Dory Cerny<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(Books for Young People editor and reviewer,\u00a0<em>Quill &amp; Quire<\/em>, Toronto),\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>Susan Chamberlain<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(owner, The Book Keeper, Sarnia) and\u00a0<span class=\"blue\"><strong>Laura Murray<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(children\u2019s librarian, Peterborough Public Library).<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span class=\"plain_black\"><strong>Learn More<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul type=\"disc\"><li><span class=\"plain_grey\">The Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children\u2019s Book Awards were established in 1976 by Sylvia Schwartz in memory of her sister, Ruth, a respected Toronto bookseller. In 2004, the family renamed the awards to honour both sisters.<\/span><\/li><li><span class=\"plain_grey\">The Ontario Arts Foundation administers the awards with the support of the Ontario Arts Council, which manages the nomination and jury process.
