New York, New York, 2017<br \/>ISBN: 9781610395335<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\"><a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thephilanthropist.ca\/\">The Philanthropist<\/a>, a good Canadian journal on philanthropy, recently issued a\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thephilanthropist.ca\/2019\/02\/book-review-putting-wealth-to-work-philanthropy-for-today-or-investing-for-tomorrow\/?utm_source=The%20Philanthropist&amp;utm_campaign=0731738b17-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2019_02_14_01_50&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_5ad5e4eaea-0731738b17-148153321\">book review<\/a>\u00a0on a book that is worth reading \u2013\u00a0<em>Putting Wealth to Work: Philanthropy for Today or Investing for Tomorrow?<\/em>\u00a0by Joel Fleischmann.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\">The book provides a good perspective on the merits (and weaknesses) of perpetual endowment foundations and short term or \u2018time limited \/ spend down\u2019 foundations. It shares a balanced perspective on both approaches.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\"><span class=\"blue\"><strong>Perpetual Foundations<\/strong><\/span><br \/>The author suggests that a benefit of perpetual foundations is that very large social issues and challenges cannot be effectively addressed within a single lifetime. Learning and applying philanthropy can grow and improve over generations.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\"><span class=\"blue\"><strong>Giving While Living<\/strong><\/span><br \/>The contrast is with a younger generation perspective of \u2018giving while living\u2019 \u2013 seeking to accomplish goals within a short time frame. This is in part reflects significant growth of personal wealth and change in profile to \u2018younger\u2019 philanthropists, often emerging from the technology sector.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\">The book covers effectively key trends in philanthropy \u2013 from a US perspective, but the themes are applicable to Canada. It includes an interesting discussion on the role of foundations in taking positions and seeking to influence public policy decisions, something we are seeing here in Canada. Mr. Fleischmann describes well the desires and considerations of donors who wish to \u2018give while living\u2019 \u2013 foundations having a fixed life, along with the importance over time of longer perspective.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\"><span class=\"blue\"><strong>Fondation des arts de l'Ontario<\/strong><\/span><br \/>The Ontario Arts Foundation falls into the latter category, we aim to grow endowment assets to provide a long term, stable and increasing source of income for arts organizations. Over time, we continue to learn about endowment and the drivers\/motivations of donors.<\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\">We recommend both the publication The Philanthropist and the book.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Putting Wealth to Work: Philanthropy for Today or Investing for Tomorrow?by Joel L.
