Since the Award, I\u00a0continued to\u00a0challenge the materials and formats of painting and made works that grow out of an inquiry into the medium of painting, as a\u00a0means of trying to understand the world around us.\u00a0Denaturalizing the medium of oil on canvas and questioning its authority,\u00a0my\u00a0recent project \u201cDon\u2019t They Ever Stop Migrating?\u201d\u00a0is a reflection upon both painting and migration, attempting to grasp the fear that host populations feel about migrants. Her work\u00a0both seeks to understand that sentiment and also to bring us back to the human. This work was shown during the Venice Biennale in 2015, toured to\u00a0The Rooms in St. John\u2019s and entered in the collection of Agnes Etherington Art Centre. A work in the similar\u00a0direction is part of the exhibition Yonder at Koffler in Toronto. class=\"blue\"><strong>What did receiving the\u00a0Laura Ciruls Painting Award mean to you?<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\">What I appreciated most about the award was the recognition of the work I had been doing as a painter.\u00a0Painting is falsely perceived as a hegemonic medium in contemporary art and I appreciate that it is valued\u00a0as an important medium by this award.<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"blue\"><strong>What does private arts philanthropy mean to you as a working artist?<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span class=\"plain_grey\">It means that art is appreciated and recognized as an integral part of our society, as something that is necessary for human
