Broken Language<\/strong><br \/>by Nathanael Larochette<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">In the past 16 years <br \/>More students have referred to me<br \/>As \u201cThe Poet Guy\u201d than I\u2019m able to remember<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Ever since leaving my last real job dishwashing<br \/>I\u2019ve found myself face to face with classrooms <br \/>Cafeterias, gymnasiums and school assemblies<br \/>Full of wide-eyed teenagers, eager keeners <br \/>Jocks, nerds, bullies and the bullied<br \/>Immigrants, refugees, broken home survivors<br \/>Youth who\u2019ve seen more hardships than most in a lifetime<br \/>And more cell phones than you can shake an apple at<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">For the past 16 years <br \/>This has been the battlefield <br \/>And the war for impressionable minds <br \/>Has never seen so many casualties<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">So when faced with the glamourous task<br \/>Of reminding youth why literacy<br \/>And self-expression are cool <br \/>I never thought I would last<br \/>But somehow I have<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">In the midst of all the madness, greed, violence and lies <br \/>There are students sitting in schools across the world <br \/>Downloading all of this information<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Told in class to pay attention a little bit <br \/>While watching the world unravel<br \/>At their fingertips<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is where I\u2019ve found myself<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">Partly by accident<br \/>Partly on purpose <br \/>Scraping my insides<br \/>For poetic reminders <br \/>Why life is still worth it<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">So I tell them to write<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">To carve their hearts into the page <br \/>Building a refuge out of sentence fragments and broken language <br \/>A shelter from anything and anyone claiming it\u2019ll crumble eventually<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">I give them those clich\u00e9d bits of advice <br \/>We all know are true but were never taught how to live<br \/>So I remind them our stories make us real<br \/>That simply speaking your meaning with feeling <br \/>Is key to weaving your dreams into being<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">And with every dancing pen<br \/>Every typed and titled <br \/>Testament to tired truth<br \/>Every petrified performer <br \/>Every collective classroom <br \/>Sigh, snap, and cheer of support <br \/>I witness what happens when the gifts we use <br \/>Move to the tune of the fear that we lose <br \/>When our doubts are drowned out<br \/>By the cheers in the room<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">All we really have to teach are the lessons we greet <br \/>Somewhere in between our sunken spirits and older fears<br \/>That which we&#8217;ve constantly stumbled over the years<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">When I step into classrooms, cafeterias<br \/>Gymnasiums and school assemblies<br \/>It\u2019s my professional obligation <br \/>To be one telling them it&#8217;s safe to be <br \/>That I won&#8217;t judge them as harshly <br \/>As I\u2019ve judged my dreams<\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\">But when I look into the eyes of the students I teach <br \/>They become that person for me<\/p><p><em>Nathanael Larochette is the 2023 recipient of the <a
