Toronto, May 9, 2012 – The Ontario Arts Foundation today announced violinist, Emily Kruspe as this year’s recipient of the $1,500 Orford String Quartet Scholarship. The scholarship is presented annually to assist a Canadian string musician with studies, commissioning or performances related to his/her work in the chamber music field.
Emily is in her third year of the Faculty of Music Performance Program at the University of Toronto, studying with Erika Raum. She is the winner of the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition (2011), the President’s Trophy and Strings Trophy at the Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto (2010), and the recipient of numerous scholarships including the Victor Feldbrill Scholarship, Jack & Erma Ruddell Scholarship and Andrew Alexander Kinghorn Scholarship. Emily has been a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra and was selected for the summer Master Class Program in Banff (2010/2011) and the Domaine Forget Chamber Music Program (2011/2012). She is a member of the Arkadas String Quartet, which recently won University of Toronto’s Felix Galimir Chamber Music Award, and will be participating in the Banff Chamber Music Residency Program in June, 2012.
The Orford String Quartet Scholarship Fund was established in 1993 by the members of the acclaimed Orford String Quartet – Andrew Dawes, Desmond Hoebig, Kenneth Perkins and Sophie Renshaw. During 25 years of performances, the Orford was one of the best-known string quartets in the world. The scholarship supports the Orford String Quartet’s influence on the development of chamber music in Canada and its encouragement of aspiring young Canadian string players.
The Orford String Quartet Scholarship Fund is administered by the Ontario Arts Foundation. The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) Awards Officemanages the nomination and selection process for the scholarship.
