Toronto, November 20, 2006 ó Cellist, David Eggert, is this year’s recipient of the $3,000 Orford String Quartet Scholarship.
David Eggert began playing cello at the age of three. He has studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and is currently a student at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Mr. Eggert garnered first prizes at the Canadian Music Competition, the National Music Festival and has just embarked on a 17-concert tour across Canada as the first prize winner of the 29th Eckhardt-Gramatté (E-gré) National Music Competition.
Mr. Eggert was selected from a field of nominees by a jury consisting of Simon Fryer (cellist with the Penderecki String Quartet and Artist in Residence at Wilfrid Laurier University), and Erika Raum (distinguished violinist and faculty member of the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music and the University of Toronto).
The Orford String Quartet Scholarship Fund was established in 1993 by the members of the highly-acclaimed Orford String Quartet — Andrew Dawes, Desmond Hoebig, Kenneth Perkins and Sophie Renshaw. During 25 years of performances, the Orford was one of the best-known string quartets in the world. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist a Canadian string musician with studies, commissions, or performances related to their work in chamber music. The scholarship supports the Orford String Quartet’s influence on the development of chamber music in Canada and its encouragement of aspiring young Canadian string players.
The Orford String Quartet Scholarship Fund is administered by the Ontario Arts Foundation. The Ontario Arts Council manages the selection process.
