Daniel Hutchinson received his BFA from the Emily Carr Institute in Vancouver and his MFA from NSCAD University in Halifax. He has mounted solo shows at YYZ Artists’ Outlet (Toronto) and Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery (Halifax), and was featured in the national survey The Painting Project: A Snapshot of Canadian Painting at L’Université du Québec à Montréal, and More Than Two (Let It Make Itself) at The Power Plant (Toronto).

Accolades include two-time semi-finalist in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition, the Brucebo Foundation Residency (Sweden) and project grants from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Hutchinson teaches painting and drawing at OCAD University and the University of Guelph. Hutchinson’s exhibition Tin Vision can currently be seen at Angell Gallery in Toronto.

Hutchinson was selected by a jury of visual artists comprising Jason Baerg (Toronto), Christian Bernard Singer (Georgian Bluffs), Erika DeFreitas (Toronto), Jamelie Hassan (London), and Gavin Lynch (Wakefield, QC). The jury members were enthusiastic and unanimous in their selection and stated, “Hutchinson’s works are making real contributions to painting in Canada. They are about the process of painting, focusing on the physical consideration of light and pushing our understanding of the medium. Hutchinson is continually exploring, never satisfied with his accomplishments and hungry for more discovery. In addition, he is an active member of his community and is adding to the impact of his work through his work as a teacher.”

The Laura Ciruls Painting Award was established by Laura Ciruls, a professional graphic and web designer, as well as an acrylic and watercolour painter. Through a bequest, Laura set up the Laura Ciruls Painting Award, to recognize artists like herself, who were contributing to the development of painting in Ontario. The Ontario Arts Foundation manages the endowment that funds the award. The Ontario Arts Council administers the nomination and adjudication process. Previous recipients of the Laura Ciruls Painting Award include: Dorian FitzGerald (2017), Steven Volpe (2016), Sasha Pierce (2015), Melissa Doherty (2014), Andrew Rucklidge (2013), and Jinny Yu (2012).
